Description
Need Proofreader for My Story - Chapter 6: 16 pages: 7605 words

Hi. My name is Kathleen West and I am an independent amateur science fiction writer that is working on a second book to self-publish. I launched my first book of the series in November 2018 and if you are interested in the website, it is available here ( https://multiverse.katiegirl.net/ ). Unfortunately, I have not yet had success with the first book or series but hope this will grow over time and the addition of more published works. Hence, I still have a very low budget for proofreading. Last year, I worked with a couple proofreaders on this site and they had a lot of fun working on my projects and appreciated their recognition in my published work. I am hoping you will consider my project as I am very easy client and flexible to work with. I don't expect immediate responses and understand that you may be working as a hobbyist and that your review takes time, reflection, and love.

I need a proofreader for my science fiction story that I hope to publish to eBook (and print) later this year. You will be proofreading only one (1) chapter in my story that will be sent as a Microsoft Word document (.docx) and you will need to use Microsoft Office (WORD) to edit, save, and return your work in the document. Your task will be providing proofreading, commentary, changes in the document with "Tracking On" so that I may either accept or reject your proofreading changes. All your edits should be made in the document (not just in the comments). However, you may comment freely about additional items/thoughts in the document. My weakness is grammar, especially with the dialogues.

Content: This story has adult and mature content. The chapter may contain but not limited to adult, nude, erotica, and subjects appropriate for mature audiences. If you accept the project and are selected, you do not have to be credited as a proofreader in the book if you do not wish.

Timelines: I would prefer 2-3 weeks or sooner for completion. I am pretty easy going to work with.

Qualifications: I am looking for a freelancer that has previous proofreading experience, a strong English language background and education, native speaker, excellent at grammar, and open-minded to mature science fiction. Please make sure your profile is complete with your background education, experience, and qualifications. If not, in your proposal, please include documents that would allow me to validate your fit for this project (such as resume, portfolio link, and resume).
Microsoft WORD is a requirement (no substitutions).

Budget: Sorry, it is very tight right now. I am looking to stay in the $35-$55 range.

Posting: I may repost this chapter job posting (have it proof read twice by two different freelancers) if I feel the need to have two rounds of proofing.

Questions: Please do read the posting to try and answer your questions before messaging me. Please do all your marketing, portfolio links, documents, in your proposal "bid" submission and not the message feature so I can best keep track of you relative to the job posting.

Selection Timeline: I hope to make a selection process in a few days or less than a week time-frame.

BEFORE YOU BID: Make sure you are a native English speaker in the United States (preferred) or UK who can adapt to US English style. Make sure your profile or BID explains how you are a qualified and experienced English proofreader. If you were hired for a previous chapter *this year*, you will probably not be selected to proofread again (I prefer unique proofreaders for each chapter).

THIS IS A FIXED PRICE JOB. BIDS THAT ARE OTHERWISE WILL BE REJECTED.

Additional Notes

On some of my book chapters, I open the idea to hiring "freshers" and newbies (those with little or no reviews but the qualifications and supporting documentation in their bid/profile) to the Guru site at discounted rates so they can get site experience, learn, and also so I can stay within a lower budget (I am independently financing). Last year, I had a lot of success working with two freshers. However, due to some recent experiences this past summer, I became aware that some new gurus may not understand the expectations of working as a proofreader for a book author or how this site works. I discovered that there a few things that a seasoned proofreader (for books) would know so that newbies need to have more guidance.

Some issues that I have noted are:

1.) Not understanding that when a bid is fixed price, no more money should be asked or negotiated after the job is accepted by the guru.
2.) Highlighting/Coloring text is not proofreading in the digital age for authors. For example, do not highlight yellow or any color in the document. If there is a question or comment, place a comment marker there so that I may see it on the side bar, note it, and quickly remove it.
3.) Style Formatting (ex: underlining/strike/etc through) of text is not proofreading. Do not suggest deletion of text by striking the text format in the document and then type the new text. Do delete the text that you suggest to be removed and/or include the new word/sentence structure while you have tracking changes on.
4.) Deleting entire sections of text (yes someone did this) and whole paragraphs is not proofreading. I should not have to explain why.
5.) The job/document that you work on to proofread is copyright, owned, and private to the author. This is usually upcoming and unpublished work. You may not share, discuss, or otherwise use any text work you do for the job on your website, portfolio, etc without explicit permission from the author. I thought that would be a no-brainer, but yet I learn common sense is not so common.
6.) Commentary/Opinions/Etc: The job task is first and primary proofreading and making the edits in the document. Authors welcome additional commentary either in a separate document or in the comments section that is the side of the document. However, it is not the primary focus of a proofreading job of where you should spend more than 5-10% of your time. I can care less of your subjective opinions about my story, it's my art and my art style of writing will not appeal to everyone, just like other writers have their own artistic styles.
7.) If any of this sounds strange to you, I'd like to suggest taking additional classes and certifications in the topic of proofreading, writing, Microsoft Word product, and learn more about the publishing industry to boost your skills and marketability as a proofreader to book authors.

and finally....

*If you do not think you can provide quality proofreading for the price you've bid (fixed), please withdraw your bid.*
