- We require the services of a proven, expert market researcher.
Our client is an automotive producer who has requested an analytical insight into the structure and level of wages of semi-skilled workers in the automotive sector in the UK, an independent, external and realistic picture of labour cost situation in their branch.
The deliverables from this research are 2 excel spreadsheets - templates to be provided to researchers with suitable credentials, a track record of similar projects and a competitive offer.
The research should be based not only on analysis of official statistical data but also on a deeper check into sector-specific resources, labour-related sources and limited primary research if needed (contacts with experts or organizations etc.).
The focus is on NACE 29.3 data (or another NACE category which is nearest to 29.3. where 29.3. is not available – in such case please propose the best alternative category and we will have this approved by the client). Data shall be researched for semi-skilled workers within this branch.
All data should reflect average value at countrywide level of the given year (2019) and should be in local currency (LC£). It will be important that the data is comparable between countries and between years (when you do the same work next time, the data needs to be consistent – hence it is important that all fields are clearly understood and filled with correct relevant data.
Please use the best possible sources in order to show a realistic picture of the labour cost situation in each country, so incl. primary research, web research, press research etc.. This is very important for our client, because information from Statistical Offices is helpful for average labour cost updates (generally) but not for such important base research. The reality should be presented in the best possible way.
TIMING
The research will need to be done in January-February 2020– based on either full year data for 2019, or based on 3Q 2019 data, as available.
DELIVERABLES
All data or information should be inserted into the client’s 2 standard excel spreadsheets
As appendices and supporting evidence, we should:
• Provide an explanation file in MS word – with the researchers comments and explanatory remarks, as needed, about the outputs and the situation in the industry’s labour costs incl. brief country description and developments there in 2019 (Where appropriate/necessary, please make explanatory notes next to the data in the xls files to provide short additional information. For more insights, use the explanations file.)
• Attach all relevant sources (original texts and documents) used for this report, such as reports on automotive labour statistics, publications from a branch association, labour unions and other sources (in English or also in local language). The best will be to prepare a “list of sources and attachments” which will be delivered together with the xls-results. The aim is for our client’s contact person to be able to present, justify and argue about the outcomes internally, referring to this material, and to be able to compare our data to other sources.
One of the sources you should use is the Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) which publishes its data on an annual basis. ASHE is based on a 1% sample of those in the Pay As You Earn Tax Scheme in the UK. Alongside the data for earnings they also have information relating to pension data. The data is collected as at April of each year and published later that same reference year, making ASHE one of the quickest annual inquiries within the UK. Other data is found in the social survey study and labour force study, all of which are from the office of national statistics.

Hourly pay - Gross
Hourly pay - Excluding overtime

You should also look for data on salaries of people in auto manufacturers or manufacturers of automotive component. The latter is the case, because the client is more interested in the costs of those who supply the OEM car maker.
