How to run a freelancer dream team and why it worths to do

Posted 13 May 2019

“Being a part of a team? What nonsense! I know and can do so much even in 15 minutes, while for others it would take 2 weeks. I earn as much as many others have never dreamed of. I can do this and that. Why do I need a team? How can I trust someone to do a part of my work?...” These and many other questions often arise in the minds of freelancers when they hear about the freelance teamwork. After all, didn’t the freelancer become a freelancer, cause he was fed up with all kinds of teams?

It's not quite like that. One African proverb says: "If you want to go fast go alone and if you want to go far go with others". So professionals team up to increase their total value. Let’s see in samples:

1. To do the work, you must first find it. That so sits a highly qualified specialist for hours, looking for projects through the internet and leaving bids. While at this time he could work and earn.

2. An average freelancer, as a rule, specializes in a certain type of work and develops in a certain direction. But new technologies and frameworks appear so often that a freelancer may simply not keep pace with them due to the constant work. And, if the project requires knowledge of some new specific technologies, then the specialist automatically drops out of the list of possible performers for this work. But if he unites with a specialist who understands this technology but does not understand another part of the project, then together they will quickly take a leading position in the market.

3. Highly qualified specialists have no need to do routine tasks (which are elementary but take a lot of time), and beginners have the opportunity to join big projects and level up their qualifications. At such cases, highly qualified experts do critical project parts, and the remaining pieces of the project are given to newcomers or middle-skilled freelancers. And each specialist wins, because when working individual, the junior performer won't be chosen for the project due to lack of qualification, and the senior could not be taken because of his higher rates.

It turns out, that working in a freelance team allows all participants to use their skills with maximum efficiency and such a way to improve their professional level. Moreover, the time for communication with clients is reduced cause it’s the teamlead’s responsibility.

For employers benefits are also obvious: they can not only have a big project done in less time and for less money but also order a complex work at once, for example, a turnkey website with relevant content and promotion strategy.

How to become a good team leader and to create your own successful dream team? Get further!

Each of us has our own understanding of the dream team and its effective work. But anyway, the task of the leader is to form such a climate of cooperation in a team, when everyone clearly understands and shares its goals, and is ready to do them with maximum efficiency.

Any team lead needs to realize why he or she creates a team and which specialists are needed. They also have to clearly specify the terms of cooperation, define the load level and the revenue percentage for each team member. It would not be extra to agree on a promotion strategy and create a scars system in case of bad work.

Obviously, the leader sets interaction's direction and tone. So, it is necessary to be proactive and open-minded: to be able to communicate with different people, clearly carry your thoughts, trust and inspire confidence, rely first on facts, not intuition.

Moreover, they also need knowledge of business processes in order not to screw up upon the client. Other important qualities of a leader are the ability to resolve a conflict situation, assess risks, be able to take responsibility for any consequences and help team members in solving problems.

A good teamlead has to “see the whole pic from the helicopter perspective". What makes it possible to build cooperation and carry out communication more logically, systematically and strategically, without unnecessary emotions.

The leader should be focused on personal and professional growth and allow all team members to do the same, be different and have own opinion. It’s a fact, that no one could be equally expert in everything and the successful team is the diverse one.

from personal experience, I can say that when the workload of a project is equally shared by everyone on a team, then the tasks do not weigh as heavily on each person, so everyone increases in productivity level thumb up

Right words but when you put people together for any length of time, there will be personality clashes and personal conflicts and if these are not effectively managed correctly, then working as a team may not offer the expected benefits.

With the ever-growing competition, its becoming more and more essential for freelancers to team up. But making decisions (cause all are different, as you've mentioned) can take longer for the sake of finding a consensus. Hence, delays occur.
