Description
I need 21 sketch-watercolor illustrations for a children's book, and also a book cover design. There may be other books to come, as it will hopefully become a series. The series will be about children who have different challenges which they are facing. The point of the series will be to provide understanding for those children facing such challenges and awareness to others who may not realize the difficulty faced by some in society.

I wrote the book for my own healing, to find a place within which I could upon draw for sustenance. Because of this, the healing quality of the book is very important to me personally. I hope that it will have the same healing quality for others.

The current plan is to self-publish but this may change depending upon circumstances.

Here is the story, as it currently stands. If there is one scene which particularly inspires you, I would appreciate your including your rendition with your application.

Musa of Omari (copyright 2019)

Once upon a time, in a land far away called Omariworld, there was a little boy. This little boy was named Musa. The name was for the first born light of the morning from his father and for the first sound of the morning from his mother. The first light contained the becoming of every dancing fairy and the first sound was a silence so deep you could barely hear the breath of the smallest leaf.

Musa felt happy lying in his little bed on the floor. When he was comfortable in between his blankets, he felt that he had everything he wanted. He would wake up in the morning with the sunshine coming in across his face, his eyes still closed. The warmth spread its welcome across his right cheek and forehead and his eyelids looked red from the inside as the sun shone through them. He heard the birds singing. "Kthrrrrr! Kthrrrrr!" "Fratididida! Fratididida!"

Slowly he opened his eyes. He noticed the pattern of the colored threads on his blanket. An orange streak wove itself like a snake across the green background. White patches like clouds floated across the green expanse beside the snake.

Mama’s voice floated dreamily from the kitchen on the notes of a song she was creating as she cooked. The notes and words of her song interwove with the scent of pancakes and fresh peaches. “Good morning, beautiful world! My hug for you, my world! Pancakes are coming, hot and fresh! Peaches are juicy and ripe. Wake up, my son! Wake up!”

The tongue of the little boy started to move gently in his mouth as he imagined a slice of peach—moist, sweet and just a little bit tart. The feel of a bite of pancake was fluffy and warm, with tiny pieces crumbling off and barely sticking to his tongue. Just a whiff of cinnamon found its way through his mouth and and nose and up into all the hidden caves behind his nostrils.

Musa imagined sitting at the table eating the pancakes. The juice of the peaches was dribbling out of the sides of his mouth and running down his chin. Mama would say, "Musa, use a napkin to wipe your chin before the juice drips onto your pajamas!" Musa smiled, imagining everything he would enjoy when he got up.

But first he wanted to feel OK. His body hurt. He had been in a very bad accident a few years ago. Now he could not lift his right arm all the way, and the muscles of his upper arm hurt most of the time. Also, his right hip and sacrum had broken in the accident. Now, his sacrum hurt a lot near the bottom of his spine where a nerve had been damaged. He was unable to completely lift his right foot. It was called "drop foot."

His right foot was numb. Sometimes when he hurt his foot he couldn't completely feel it. One time, he had tripped and fallen. There had been rocks underfoot. He fell on the rocks. It wasn't until he got home that his mother noticed that there was blood on his foot. "Musa, what happened?" Mama asked. Musa said, "I tripped. I fell down on some rocks." Mama said, "Let's put a bandaid on your foot. It's bleeding." Musa wondered, "Can remember to pick up my foot higher when I walk? But then I get so tired. And then my back hurts a lot more."

So Musa kept lying in bed that morning, doing the exercises the physical therapist had given him. He wanted the pain in his sacrum to stop before he got up. He dug his left heel down into the wall at the end of his bed. At the same time, he pushed his right thigh up into the palm of his right hand. He felt something in his sacrum move near his lower spine. He switched to the other side, digging his right heel into the wall while he pushed his left thigh up into the palm of his left hand. Yes. This was helping. Then Musa pulled his knees up into his chest, put his arms around them and hugged them. That felt good. Soon he felt much better.

"Mama, I'm ready! I'm ready for pancakes and peaches!." Musa climbed out of his bed--a pile of blankets that Mama had carefully built on the floor so that he would be comfortable and warm but the bed not too soft so that his back would hurt less. Slowly he walked to the kitchen, lifting his left foot more so that he wouldn't trip. Mama smiled. "That's the way, my boy! You can do it!"

Musa took a deep breath. He smiled. "I love pancakes, Mama!" He wanted to run over and hug her, but he already felt tired. So he sat down at the table and blew her a big kiss--"MMMWAHH!" Musa's mother came over behind him, put her hands firmly on his upper arms and gave him a big kiss on his left cheek. "I love you, my boy. Here's a napkin for those juicy peaches." She smiled.
