Fables About Remote Workers

Posted 29 October 2019

Good afternoon, dear employers!

Statistically, remote working is becoming more and more popular worldwide. According to the OwlLabs survey, 51% of on-site employees want to work remotely in the future and about 30% may want to. A lot of companies see it more prospective and efficient. Some companies tend to allow particular workers to work from home if they see it is more comfortable for them. Besides, there are the companies, which allow their workers to work either remotely or in an office.

At the same time, the more remote workers appear, the more fables about them we hear every day. They make employers doubt about the productivity of such style of work. Such myths are not true, or are just partly true, but they exactly cause distrust between employees and employers (especially newbies). In this article, we are eager to find those fables, tell about them and demystify. Here we go!

Myth 1 - Lazy workers

People, who have never faced remote work, have a tendency to think of remote workers as lazy ones. And, as you’ve already understood, that is false.

In fact, it is opposite. As a rule, remote workers or freelancers feel more responsibility for their job. They work harder because they know their employers show the trust toward them by giving a possibility to work from home and have more leisure time. Usually remote employees work even harder and have more enthusiasm to do the task better than on-site colleagues in order to show their value for the company.

Myth 2 - Remote workers are cheaters

Another thing, which outsources usually have on their mind, is that their off-site employees cheat on them.

Do you think that your remote worker is doing nothing or very little during his working hours? Again, this is just one of the trust issues. If you have built trustful relationships between each other, if you are sure in a person, who you allowed to work from home, then there is no evidence to worry about cheating.

Remote workers appreciate the trust and comfort, so they don’t cheat on their employers. Every-day and every-week contact with a manager and time trackers can help you to ascertain in that.

Moreover, in compliance with the survey, 79% of workers feel better focus and higher productivity while working from-home.

Myth 3 - Supplementary costs

Companies are prone to thinking remote workers make them spend more overall costs. Telling the truth, again, it is the opposite.

Money which employers spend on making offices convenient for on-site workers are much bigger. The company, actually, will definitely save more money if makes at least 30% of its workforce remote.

Myth 4 - Bad company culture

Nine times out of ten, employers say that the remote work has a bad impact on their culture. They suppose the workers become less united and cooperate between each other worse. Such stuff as coffee breaks in the office help colleagues to have some rest and communicate, while working remotely just make specialists less involved in what’s going on inside the company.

The fact is that it depends on the company and its rules itself.

The company which manages to arrange permanent communication between workers by making general chat rooms, video conferences, informal and formal meetings in real life doesn’t face this problem.

In addition, remote workers are even more eager to meet one another and communicate more because they don’t have such an opportunity daily.

Myth 5 - No influence

The 5-th fable is about the lack of influence on remote employees.

If you have open and clear communication with people, then you’ll influence them even not being with them physically. Respect which off-site workers feel toward the hirers may become even stronger if you encourage conversations, meetings and conferences.

Myth 6 - Unhappiness and stress

One of the reasons why employers don’t want to give a possibility of remote style of work is because they consider it too stressful as workers feel lonely and unhappy without the team.

On the ground of FlexJobs survey, 77% of remote workers feel less stressed, happier and healthier because of such flexibility. Having a comfortable working space and work-life balance, more spare time and other benefits definitely influence people well.
