• a single Word (or similar) document that includes the two tasks.
Scenario
You are an assistant quantity surveyor working for a small quantity surveying practice called ARP Associates. You are working with your manager on a project called Hawthorn Tree which is a 14-unit housing development.
You are working on Plots 10 and 11 of the project. The drawings for Plots 10 and 11 include plans, a section, as well as general specification information and construction details that relate to all of the units on the development.

Task 1 (equivalent to 1,500 words)
Your manager has asked you to measure all of the Substructure works up to and including DPC for Plots 10 and 11 of the project. Your submission needs to include the following:
a. Marked up drawings of items measured;
b. A take-off list for all items relevant to the measure;
c. Query and assumption sheet relating to the measure;
d. A take-off / measure for all items relevant to the substructure up to and including the DPC. Exclude the ground floor construction.
You are required to produce the take-off on traditional dimension paper in a typed form – NOT hand written;
e. A Bill of Quantity for the Substructure measure up to DPC. As per item d) above you are to exclude the ground floor construction in this Bill of Quantity. Descriptions for all items must include full specification information as required by the Standard Method of Measurement (SMM) such as NRM2, i.e. don’t use abbreviations or shorthand descriptions.
NOTES relating to Task 1:
• To help you better understand the assignment, illustrative examples and parts of drawings are included in Appendix A. However when undertaking your work on the assignment, you must work from the PDF copies of drawings.
NOTE on the use of a Standard Method of Measurement for Task 1:
For Task 1, you will need a copy of a standard method of measurement (SMM) to complete this assignment.
You are expected to use NRM2 – Detailed Measurement for Building Works (2012).
Task 2 (approximate word count: 1,000 words)
‘The manual process of measuring quantities from drawings is no longer a skill required by the Quantity Surveyor (QS).’
Critically discuss the above statement with reference to the development in technology to support measurement. Your essay should explain the advantages and disadvantages and the future impacts of this on the role of the QS.
You must state the total number of words used at the end of Task 2.
Reference list for Task 2
You should include a reference list with a minimum of four separate relevant and appropriate sources that you have written about and directly cited within your work for Task 2.
A bibliography of uncited sources is not required.
Submission Requirements for Task 1 and 2:
You may use the two templates provided, although these will require further editing and modification before they are submitted. The Excel template relates to Task 1 and the Word template to Tasks 1 and 2. You may also develop your own documents or develop documents that you have access to through your work as long as they contain all of the required parts that need to be submitted (see further detail below).
Both Tasks are to be submitted in one file – Word (or similar) document.
Task 1
Marked up drawings (showing items measured on drawings) inserted in the Word file as images.
Various pages from an Excel (or similar) document (you may use the template provided or one you create yourself) this needs to include the following:
a. A take-off list for all items that are to be measured.
b. Query and assumption list relating to the measure.
c. A take-off / measure for all work associated with the substructure up to and including DPC (excluding the ground floor construction), in traditional dimension paper form BUT to be typed and NOT hand written.
d. A Bill of Quantities for the all the works measured.
Task 2
An essay responding to Task 2.
