Description: The historical debate between the intentionalist and functionalist schools of thought in Holocaust studies has flourished throughout the last few decades of the twentieth century. Please research and provide a historical evaluation of the two different approaches. Please make this 2000-2500 words and use at least 8 historical sources. Please make this analytical in nature and therefor begin with a clear thesis. Please include references with page numbers in footnotes and a bibliography.

Possible direction: Since the fall of the Soviet Union, historical records previously held behind the Iron Curtain have done much to increase our knowledge of the policies and practices of the Third Reich. This expansion in understanding has softened the division between these two schools of thought.

A note on sources: Please do not use websites or Wikipedia, only journal articles or books accessed online. I can provide a list of sources I have found which can assist.
