- I am going to make a pivot from a SaaS appliction to a focus on APIs, to penetrate the market faster, but this pivot needs to be well researched adn planned out. We have data that no other US website or Realtor has access to.
Hands-on Research & detailed actionable strategic launch plan for new API data and technology startup
BACKGROUND:
After many years of aggregation and development work, we have developed unique data visualization technology that, with a back-end database of monthly and quarterly economic and demographic USA datasets Today, this data and technology is not on the web. Zillow does not have nor the MLS, CoStar or the web.

CHANGES - I do NOT want to just launch a B2C subscription service, nor do we want to just build and API, and hope…so I need a well-researched plan for success and fast revenue growth, that can be implemented quickly. I will then hand off this action plan to my software developers to program. Then hand off the marketing plan to you or some other bidder. The plan has to have details and specifics, not general industry macro or non API stuff.
We are pivoting to focus on the API, mostly so we can gain market attraction and scale fast. We do not want to just sell a monthly subscription service from our website one-to-one. This would take too long to scale and penetrate the real estate market. Building the API right, and build partnerships faster, is critical.
Our target market is any company that is currently using APIs for demographic and economic data and RE forecasts, including Commercial and residential real estate professionals, brokerages, real estate portals/websites, RE crowdfunding sites, real estate investors/websites, and more.
I need research done on a new API we are going to develop to deliver real-time data mapping technologies and monthly demographics and economic data for USA markets.
Goals: Fast API adoption and revenues
STEP 1: API COMPETITION RESEARCH:
Core questions I need answered:
1) WHO SELLS yearly demographic and economic data via APIs and their pricing??
2) WHO are the top players, and what is their market share and industry focus? (I could not find this answer in my online research listed below)
3) How do they sell, what tactics and strategies?
4) Who has the best UI & documentation? So we are NOT reinventing the wheel, just using the “best of.”
5) I need this research so that I can compete effectively and quickly. And get market share.
6) Do we do the initial designs of the API based upon a small limited set of variables, like in the current application, with ~15 variables, or with the full set? See doc titled Total Variables We Aggregate Every Month Quarter.docx If full set, I need an intuitive UI design.
7) Of the core competitors, what is their pricing matrix for API calls? Is there a membership fee too, and what is this? Benefits of membership?
Once we have these answers - Then we price our APIs less, and have other features/benefits too.
Once we have the research and pricing and basic UI designs right.
We get some feedback and set up a pilot or mockup online, to get initial customers and developer pilot’s feedback.
Once we have this feedback, my developers can do the API development in less than a week, but they need the exact pricing and designs. And I need a solid marketing plan and ready/hungry customers ready to buy.

Focus on the RIGHT developers – right individuals, companies, etc. To get feedback, post on API Forums. RESEARCH. First focus on the right developer community. Once core research is done….Get feedback for key influencers and authority people within the industry. Could be done with or WITHOUT coding. Maybe build in Swagger UI. See https://github.com/swagger-api/swagger-ui and create the content on GitHub. Show to a closed audience. Create mockups of the UI, inputs and outputs. Get lots of feedback.
STEP 2: PRODUCT SEGMETAION and QUESTIONS and HANDS-ON API RESEARCH
Research and watch and learn from our target audience:
1. Ask our community via any and all existing channels, such as email, calls, Forum posts, web meetings, and track and record all results and feedback.
2. Create targeted surveys, and record feedback from targeted audience.
3. Interact with online API forums, and other tools, to get feedback and measure and track interest.
4. Once new feedback on the new API UI is done, get additional feedback on the end user experience through correspondence with potential clients.
5. How to segment the data and our features? Some options below, that need to be fine tuned based upon facts and research.

2) 2019 standard economic and demographic data that others have - have cheaper than the competition??? CORE QUESTION: WHO SELLS THIS and their pricing?? Who have the market share for CRE reports?

15) Maybe we run algorithm based upon the criteria the user selects. Get a listing, relocate based upon weighted and filtered query, etc. Have a drop down box of choices. More $$$ ???
As we have more calls, do we create a demand pricing matrix as we grow? If so, how to do this?
STEP 3: MARKET SEGMENTATION and ANALYSIS
- Segmenting the developer & user ecosystem. Target developer and market segments include: title companies, RE investment reports, appraisal reports, buy/sell reports, ad networks, marketing reports, direct-mail applications, other API software companies and API developers, mapping companies, LBS firms, advertisers, other aggregators, retail location or re-location tools & apps, urban planners, logistics, etc.
- Establishing API business use cases and revenue models
Who would be the most likely early adopter and evangelists? And who exactly to best partner with? (Search on GitHub and where else?) What revenue split to offer, what is the norm, and what to expect?
STEP 4: HOW TO INITALLY PRICE API?
This step is based upon the above results and research.
Charge by “object” call, query, data point, or what?
Have something that is free forever?
How to leverage 3rd parties, and who are these 3rd parties?
Options include: Calls based upon one shapefile (color) or one set? Pricing based upon dataset used, for example, the future value, or expect price change in 6-36 months, each could have a different price point.
