- I work for a school. I am in charge of the Media Team. These are students who put together the school newspaper and run the on-campus radio station. The software we have been using for the radio station does not allow us to schedule specific audio tracks for specific times of the day.
I need a program that is a Media Player/Scheduler that easy to use for High School students. It needs the ability to create/edit/save a playlist of potentially hundreds of mp3 files. It has to be able to play that playlist on an infinite loop. It also needs to have the ability to schedule specific audio tracks to interrupt the playlist and play at specific times. When the scheduled track is finished playing it needs to resume the playlist.
I would like the students to be able to schedule an entire day's worth of radio content in just a few minutes as they have very little time outside of class to actually work on the radio station.
Ideally, students would come into the radio studio, sit down at the PC running this software and be able to immediately drag and drop multiple files into the playlist. They would then be able to organize the playlist manually by clicking and dragging tracks up or down from one part of the list to another. There would also be a shuffle button that would randomize the order of the playlist when pressed.
After the student has imported all of the songs they want into the playlist, they could press a button marked "add scheduled show" or something along those lines to schedule specific times to play specific audio tracks. This would be used for scheduling pre-recorded podcast episodes, or perhaps pre-recorded news breaks. This would essentially be a second playlist that would allow the student to select an audio file and then set a specific time for that file to be played. There would also be an option (maybe a checkbox) that would allow the audio file to be played at that same time each day.
After editing their playlist and scheduling the pre-recorded shows the student could leave the room knowing the software will play the music from the playlist on repeat until the scheduled times at which point the audio tracks they had specified will play, and after which the playlist would resume.
Additionally, I would like to have crossfading audio so that each track blends into the next. I would like a "voice over" button that while clicked lowers the volume of music playback by 10db or so, allowing the DJ to speak over the song.
And I would like an "interruption" button that is essentially "Stop" button but that when pressed not only stops whatever is playing but immediately plays a pre-selected audio track which can be selected via a drop-down options menu. That way students can pre-record an audio track of something like "This is a Breaking News Alert" and then if they need to do a news break can press that button with News Alert selected and the music will stop, the breaking news alert message would play and then the students can begin talking.
So bottom-line is this software is 3 playlists. One that can be easily added too and edited and is designed to play 24/7 on loop. The second is a list of scheduled audio tracks that only play when they're supposed too and interrupt the first playlist to do so, only to resume that playlist after they finish. The third playlist is one of short announcement type recordings that can be used to transition from random music to Live Broadcast for any number of situations.
I used to program in Visual Basic back in the day but when I tried to make this program myself I got as far as the first playlist working and couldn't figure out how to do the rest. As a Teacher, I don't have a ton of free time so I decided to reach out and see if there are any guru's out there would tackle this for me.
While this is a project for a high school I am paying for it out of my own pocket. The school doesn't have money in its budget for stuff like this. I plan on installing it on the school's computer and just letting them have it for free no matter what it ends up costing me.
I don't care if it's programmed in Visual Basic or Visual C# or whatever so long as it will run on a Windows 10 computer and do everything I need. I have attached a mockup I did in Visual Basic/Photoshop if you can make it look prettier that would be great!
