- Fractl’s mission is to produce the most engaging and impactful human experiences on the web – one client, campaign, and domain at a time.We’re looking for creators around the world to take on project assignments and offer the most competitive freelancer compensation structure in the industry, with an initial range of $1,000 – $1,500 per project, depending on complexity.
Fractl is building a pool of creators to work with us as project managers across all of our major content verticals. All Fractl projects have a data component to them, whether that means conducting a large scale research survey, analyzing large open data sets, or leveraging expertise to work with tools such as machine learning, natural language processing, or other advanced methods. The ultimate goal of bringing all these tools into the fold is to help readers understand the facts of a story and see information in a new light.
What you'll do
Our initial application is to be included in our open pool of creatives. Once here, you'll be eligible to work on freelance projects with a compensation rate of $1,000 – $1,500 per assignment.
As a freelance project manager, your work begins when you are assigned a topic. This will typically be in the form of 1-2 paragraphs outlining a project and a brief explanation of the data sources you’ll need to complete your work. Many of Fractl’s projects consist of large scale surveys administered via online human intelligence testing platforms like Prolific Research, Mechanical Turk, or Qualtrics, but you may also be directed to publicly available data sets that you will be analyzing.
Once you have an assignment, your work will be a mix of data analysis and writing—every project we produce has some data analysis component to it. This could be as simple as building bar charts from a spreadsheet or as complex as coding your own interactive visualizations.This will all depend on the scope of the assignment, your own skill level with analysis, and the complexity of what the project needs to accomplish.
There are several steps along the way in which you’ll communicate directly with your in-house editor, typically to check on progress, answer questions, and provide help and resources along the way. We have a rigorous editorial process at Fractl with intermittent steps throughout a project, which allows us to avoid needing to make large changes to a campaign once a lot of time and resources have been devoted to it.
Most of our projects should require around 30-50 hours of total time commitment on your end. Depending on the project, this will be spread out over anywhere from 2-6 weeks. If your schedule allows and your skills align, you'll be able to take on multiple projects at once. Freelancers who complete at least one project per month for three months will also receive additional compensation for each consecutive month they complete a project thereafter.
Who should apply?
We encourage anyone with experience or an interest in data analysis or journalism to apply. While we look for a well-rounded set of skills, you shouldn't hesitate to apply if you're not proficient in everything below looks familiar. We’re interested in meeting you if you have experience with any of the following:
- Publishing your work - we are most interested in seeing your past work (with or without a byline) as part of your portfolio. A lack of publishing history doesn’t disqualify anyone, but having established work is a big plus.
- Compiling, cleaning, or analyzing data with a basic spreadsheet program like Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets
- Working with foundational languages of data science like Python, R, SQL, or SAS
- Experience with other languages such as MATLAB, C/C++, Java, UNIX shell, Perl, Ruby, Lisp or others
- Visualizing data with open software like Tableau, Google Charts, D3.js, or ggplot2, as well as proprietary software packages. Note: Our design team creates most final visualizations, but you will need to make the basic visualizations for them to begin with.
- Applied statistics skills such as statistical testing, regression, modeling, etc
- Any previous work with machine learning or natural language processing
- Previous writing, editing, or research work in any of Fractl’s main content verticals:
