- Let's face it: fixing bugs in PHP, JavaScript, Smarty by slapping yet another patch on top of the pile is rather easy. And it was done for many years already. Result: other bugs.
It's about thirty bees. A highly successful e-commerce solution, which still shares about 85% of its code with PrestaShop 1.6.1. Successful enough to make good developers a rarity, they're all covered with setting up, migrating and customizing shops.
The job:
Go to our bug tracker (https://github.com/thirtybees/thirtybees/issues), preferably to the older bugs, pick your choice, evaluate what the problem is, find the required steps to reproduce and enhance code until the issue is gone. Provide (preferably atomic) commits (by email, by a link, even pull requests work). It's open source, no need for secrets.
Then repeat until the bug tracker is empty.
The challenge:
- thirty bees is fairly full featured already, while reliability has a very high priority for merchants (our users), so adding new features has currently a lower priority. Please resist.
- Code stack is many years old, which shows up in some places. More often than not one can fix bugs by refactoring code or auditing it for usage of the same design principles across all places. And doing work this way should be the first choice, before adding more code.
- Code has to work not for one website, but for thousands. Mess up somewhere in code going into a release and thousand fingers will point to you!
- Every single commit on the main branch has to pass the testsuite. So you should know what "git rebase -i", "git commit --amend" and similar commands mean. Some Github-GUI toy likely won't do it, merging is frowned upon. See http://jump-ing.com/traumflugs/github_best_practices
- Me is a nitpicker (but also trying to be helpful).
Expected skills:
- Development experience on a LAMP or MAMP stack (WAMP/XAMPP not really supported), or willingness to learn.
- Some love for good code design and the KISS principle. And the patience to discuss the best strategy for a brilliant merchant and shop customer experience.
- Bonus points for PrestaShop 1.6 or thirty bees experience (which are pretty much a framework on their own).
About the contract:
As the required work to fix a bug is hard to predict (some will turn out to be fixed already, others might need 50 hours), work on a per-hour base is wanted. Payout happens on each bug resolved.
P.S.: guru.com insist on having a deadline, while there is in fact none. It's an ongoing job.
