- here is what we need assistance with....
We are a tech company who installs networks and provides technical services. We outsource various programming and consulting work.
We just setup up a small nursery school with a local area network with a file server running windows server 2016 standard with (IIS) Internet Information Server.
We have 2 types of users... Managers and Users
A) Managers will edit spreadsheets on our network
and -
B) Teachers who will need to open & read the spreadsheets using their browser (some have iPhones, iPads & android phones so most of them will not have the Excel program installed on their devices)
Note - We are moving off of Office 365 & are bringing everything in-house with our own file server.
The way we are set up is like this - Managers in our office login to our LAN & update approximately 12 spreadsheets all day long. A few managers share the files and we set up “Legacy file sharing” and it works fine internally. (We are NOT using the Office 365 portal for sharing and collaborating on files)
These changes that are made in the spreadsheets are time sensitive & need to be read by Teachers using their browsers on smartphones & tablets so they can see the "up to the minute" changes that may have been made in the spreadsheets.
So here’s what we have set up now and what we are looking for assistance with...
I know that if I make the managers home directory the WWWROOT folder & then they can update these files all day long like any LAN user. We can provide a link to these files on the local IIS by pointing the users to the local file server, accessible by a browser request to the address of the local web server ( ie. http://192.168.1.100/ExcelFile.xlsx ) and if they are connected to our LAN when in the office, then they have read-only access to the files immediately.
Here is where we need your expertise...
1) This model seems to work but i’d like to discuss potential browser conflicts as well as discuss any possible alternative solutions that would be more efficient.
2) Additionally we’d like to make these files accessible from outside our LAN poss by copying the files to our web server and giving teachers access to these files when they’re outside of our office.
if you have expertise working with Excel both on the network, and accessing Excel files over the Internet using a browser we’d like to consult with you.
