Thinking skills and using them to solve problems is the single most important skill that our children will need going forward. Our children will be solving future problems, some of which, we can’t even imagine yet. They’ll face challenges that require skills to define a problem, design an appropriate solution, and put it to effective use.
Thinking and Problem solving are such exciting areas, and so crucial for our children's progress and their future needs, that it should be the first and the foremost topic in our school curriculum.
Yet, our school team our children the languages, maths, sceince, social science but not one course, not one lecture on thinking and problem solving skills
Thinking Skills are mental processes we use to do things like: solve problems, make decisions, ask questions, construct plans, evaluate ideas, organise information and create objects. It includes ability to gather information, to distinguish useful extracts from information, to store and retrieve useful infromation to and from memory, to organize and arrange information into sequential and logical constructs, to form concepts and to oull out concepts from one situation and to apply them in another situation, to identify similarities, differences, repeatabilities and patterns, to link ideas together.
Thinking Skills is important for any kind of problem solving
The problem solving skill on the other hand, can be split into a number of individual and acquirable tools like
Critical thinking - to correlate the logical connections between ideas and be able to jump from one idea to another.
Lateral thinking - to pick a concept or the methodology from one problem on a particular subject and apply it into a totally different problem of another subject.
Different Perspectives - to view a problem from different angles, different aspects so as to find a view from where it is easiest to tackle it
Logical Deduction - to arrive at a conclusion in logical step by step way from one or more premises.
Deconstruction - to split a large problem into smaller managable problems and solve them one at a time, leading to solving the large problem
Pattern recognition and extrapolation - to find the not so obvious patterns and to apply them to extrapolate a solution
Visualisation - to tranlate words & sentences into visual images and structures and visualise the solution with a clarity of thought
Reflection - to look back after successfully solving a problem to reflect what new knwoledge and skill has been acquired from this expereince of solving the problem and how it can be applied in solving other problems
Persistence - to make a determined and patient effort to get to the bottom of a problem and solve it

What if there is an easily learnable yet universally applicable technique that can be used for solving any problem, I repeat, any problem that your child encoutners in his/her school curriculum OR otherwise?
