- The purpose of this project is to develop a mathematical model of the efficacy of various teeth whitening treatments referencing popular teeth shade guide systems such as the VITA Classical shade guide system and the VITA System 3-D MASTER shade guides. The model will be used to drive a simple web-based teeth whitening shade calculator so that end-users can input their current shade, calibrated by the shade guide system, and the system will estimate shade improvement as well as the diminishment of shade over time.
The ideal candidate will have at least a bachelors degree in mathematics, computer science, physics or physical sciences. In addition, the candidate must have a strong working knowledge of color theory such as the difference between HSB and RGB color systems, and the mathematical modeling of color. Familiarity with dental color matching systems and Adobe Photoshop would be a plus.
The project requires reviewing various clinical studies regarding the efficacy of various teeth whitening treatments such as prescription overnight whitening trays, day time whitening treatments, in-office visits, and whitening strips, and developing a mathematical algorithm to describe the improvements referencing one or more of the popular shade guide systems.
The model can be delivered as an excel spreadsheet, javascript or pseudocode. This "Teeth Shade Improvement Estimator" model will be used as the basis of developing an algorithm to be implemented on a website available to all.
