Top real qualities for freelance writers

Posted 25 March 2019

Everyone knows that a true writer (copywriter, rewriter, any specific author...doesn’t matter) should write competently and coherently. They must be able to understand the topic and tell about it clearly, according to the customers’ requirements. But all we know that it’s not enough sometimes. So what are real reasons to choose one writer and not the another? Let’s search out together!

  1. First and maybe one of the main top freelance writers qualities is flexibility. It means that the freelancer have to write a big serious text on a clear-cut unfamiliar subject, as well as a short funny post to facebook. If you create texts on your own or rewrite a template, you should be able to feel its idea and the audience, wholly adapting your style.

  2. The next important issue is to be open to criticism. You may think that your text is perfect, but situations when your client disagree with it are quite possible. And it’s very important to hear what is wrong and to fix it, without nerves.

  3. The ease and the sense of humour. Yes, some topics require a serious approach, scientifically confirming facts and maximum clarity. But a sense of humor in the freelance writing profession doesn’t mean knowing the heap of jokes but the capacity to write easily, even on complex themes.

  4. Foreign languages skills. At least so that you can find the information for your texts from truly different sources. At most — to earn more.

  5. Ability to work with images. And we are not talking about “add a picture from Google to your text”. Images are an eyeliner to the texts and its continuation at the same time. You don’t need to draw a pic or take a photo but if you can not only find an appropriate image on the photo stock but also personalize it (edit, make a title, cut if it's necessary ...), then you become a more attractive performer automatically.

  6. Basics marketing knowledge. Of course, you can write entertainment content only. It is one of the charms of freelancing — to choose solely interesting for you projects. But the reality of today's world is that any text has a specific target action. Sometimes it's entertaining and attracting the audience but more often it's making people to do something. For example, leave a like or comment, follow the link, share the post, subscribe email notifications or order the product. No matter what action you want to get, to make it organically, you need to know the basics of marketing. And a little bit of psychology.

  7. Basics html skills. A writer doesn't have to be a programmer, but it’s not always enough to be able to write the text in your favorite editor. If you know tags that make the bold or italics type, how to highlight headings and make indents — you're already one step ahead of the competitions.

  8. Basics seo knowledge. Similarly to the previous points, a basic understanding of SEO will allow you to write the truly effective texts. After all, who needs even the most jolly, simple to read and informative material, if it doesn't work?

  9. Self time-management skills. For any freelancer, it's very important to rate your own strength appropriately and build the right life-working schedule. Remember, that if you’re missing deadlines today, you won’t get work from this client tomorrow.

  10. And finally, don't underestimate the ability to work in a team. Even freelancers often come across the fact that the amount of diverse people work for a client at once— programmers, marketers, seo specialists, designers .... In this case, you need to be able to delegate responsibilities correctly. For example, know from the digital marketer who the target audience of the company is and adopt the style of writing according to it. Or ask the designer for a perfect pic to your text.

In addition, we advise you as a freelancer writer (any-category freelancer, actually) to get a financial literacy. Rate yourself fairly, don't promise stuff you can't do, use a safe deal cooperation to protect yourself from unpleasant surprises and be ready to find a payment system, fitting both for you and your clients.

Are there points you disagree with? Or maybe you can add your own?

I am sure it takes a great deal of perceptiveness and understanding of basic human psychology to be a good copywriter

Bad copywriters often stuff their work with literary devices in an attempt to make some sort of high-minded art out of an innocuous project. Good copywriters, on the contrary, understand the modern world. Theyre knowledgeable about how consumers skim and read, and your points about SEO and marketing are so true.

I'd like to add an understanding of how social networks work. As even if you create a funny content only it differs in IN, FB, instagram etc
